How O'Hare is laid out

The big picture in a minute

O'Hare has four passenger terminals — 1, 2, 3, and 5 (there's no Terminal 4). Terminals 1, 2, and 3 sit together in the main core and are connected, while Terminal 5 — the international terminal — is a short ride away. Inside each, the layout is consistent: an upper level for departures and check-in and a lower level for arrivals and baggage claim.

Each terminal branches into lettered concourses (your gate will be something like "C12" or "K9"), and a free train called the ATS ties everything together, including the remote parking and rental-car hub. Once you know your terminal and concourse, getting around is genuinely simple — and the maps above show every detail.

Flying in and want to skip the navigation entirely? We meet you at baggage claim or the arrivals curb — see the terminal pickup guide and full airport guide.

Between terminals

The ATS train ties it together

The Airport Transit System (ATS) is O'Hare's free, automated train, and it's the key to moving around. It runs around the clock and connects all four terminals with the Multi-Modal Facility — the hub for economy parking, rental cars, and the Metra commuter station.

  1. 1It's free and frequent. No fare, trains every few minutes, 24/7 — just follow the "ATS / Train to Terminals" signs.
  2. 2Links 1, 2, 3, and 5. Hop between any terminals on one loop — essential when your arrival and connection are in different terminals.
  3. 3Reaches the Multi-Modal Facility. The same train serves economy parking, the rental-car center, and the Metra North Central Service to the suburbs.
  4. 4Allow a little time. It's quick, but a terminal change means a walk to the platform plus the ride — build in a few extra minutes, especially with a tight connection.

Connecting from an international arrival at Terminal 5 to a domestic flight? You'll typically re-check bags, take the ATS to your departure terminal, and clear security again. The airport guide walks through it.

Parking, trains & ground transport

Beyond the terminals themselves, here's how the rest of O'Hare's ground side fits together — and where you'll find it on the full airport map.

The CTA Blue Line station sits beneath the core terminals and runs to downtown — handy, but slow with luggage and not ideal pre-dawn. Door-to-door is easier.

The easiest exit: skip the maze

Maps are great for finding your gate — but the simplest way out of O'Hare is to have a chauffeur waiting where you land. No tracking down a parking shuttle, no rideshare deck, no train with your bags.

  1. 1We meet you on arrivals. Baggage claim with a name sign, or the lower-level curb — see the pickup guide.
  2. 2Flat rate, flight-tracked. One fixed price with tolls included, timed to your real landing — see flight tracking.
  3. 3Straight to your door. Downtown, a hotel, or any suburb — check times and rates on our service-area map.

Terminal map FAQ

Your questions, answered

How do I open the O'Hare terminal maps? +
Tap any map tile in the maps section above — the full-size map opens as a PDF in a new tab that you can pinch-to-zoom on your phone or enlarge on a computer. There's a complete airport map plus a separate map for each of Terminals 1, 2, 3, and 5.
How many terminals does O'Hare have? +
Four: Terminals 1, 2, 3, and 5. There is no Terminal 4 — the number is skipped. Terminals 1, 2, and 3 form the connected core, and Terminal 5 is the international terminal a short ATS ride away.
How do I get from one terminal to another? +
Take the free Airport Transit System (ATS) train, which runs 24/7 and connects all four terminals plus the Multi-Modal Facility (economy parking, rental cars, and Metra). Follow the "ATS / Train to Terminals" signs and allow a few extra minutes for the walk and ride.
Which terminal is my airline in? +
Generally United is Terminal 1, American is Terminal 3, and Delta, Southwest, and Frontier — plus most international flights — are Terminal 5; Terminal 2 handles United Express and partners. Confirm on your boarding pass, and open that terminal's map above for the gate detail.
Where is U.S. Customs at O'Hare? +
In Terminal 5, the international terminal, where most overseas flights arrive. Preclearance flights (from Canada and Ireland) clear customs before departure and land at a domestic terminal instead. See the airport guide for the international arrival steps.
Where do I meet my car at the airport? +
On the lower (arrivals) level — at baggage claim with meet & greet, or at the arrivals curb. Your chauffeur texts the exact spot for your terminal once you land. Full detail is in the terminal pickup guide.
Are these the official O'Hare maps? +
They're the standard airport terminal maps, provided here for your convenience. Because layouts change with ongoing construction, always follow in-terminal signage and check flychicago.com for the most current version.
